On average, a Canadian family uses between 20 and 40 liters (5 to 10 gallons) of cleaning products every year. Each year, 54,000 tonnes of toxic substances are released into the air and water in Canada.

• What can I do to avoid toxic substances in household products?
  Opt for natural products, certified organic and non-toxic. Beware of “greenwashing”: the official and trustworthy accredited brand names are Eco-Logo, GreenGuard and Green Seal. Better yet: clean with everyday household products (baking soda and white vinegar).
• To avoid at all costs: oven cleaners, anti-rust products, bleach, sprays and air fresheners that are chemically based.
